THE TWELVE HOUSES IN MUNDANE ASTROLOGY.

世俗占星中的十二宫

THE twelve houses bear the same meaning in Mundane as in Natal astrology, but adapted to the circumstances of a nation rather than of a single person.

世俗占星中的十二宫与本命占星中的含义相同，但前者适用于国家而非个人的情况。

The First House.—The country and its inhabitants as a whole; its general condition of prosperity and health or the reverse. 

第一宫——国家及其居民的整体状况；国家的整体繁荣与健康状况，或相反。

The Second House.—National wealth, the Exchequer, Taxation, Revenue, and all places and activities concerned in money making, such as Banks, the Stock Exchange, and Trade.

The Third House.—All means of inland transit, locomotion, or communication, such as railways, road and river traffic, motor cars. The Fourth House.—Land, the owners of it and th workers on it. The crops and produce of the land. Mines, buildings. The people as contrasted with the monarch; the democracy as contrasted with the aristocracy ; the Opposition in Parliament.

第四宫——土地、土地所有者和土地上的劳动者。土地上的作物和产出。矿山、建筑物。人民（与君主相对）；民主（与贵族相对）；议会中的反对派。

A planet close to the cusp of this house may influence the weather according to its nature. A malefic in this house may afflict the Government through its opposition to the Tenth House.

The Fifth House.—Theatres and all places of amusement, entertainment, and pleasure. The _ birth-rate, children, schools. Sports, speculation, betting, regarded more as sources of amusement and excitement than as means of earning money.

In addition there seems to be some reason for thinking that the fifth house has something to do with society, especially High Society and formal social functions, from those associated with Royalty and the upper classes downwards; perhaps because of their pleasure giving character. Saturn or some other malefic is sometimes in this house at times of Court mourning.

The point has also been raised whether the fifth house may not relate to the House of Lords, the opposition of the eleventh. The older astrologers included Ambassadors under this house.

The Sixth House.—Public health or sickness. The national services; Army, Navy, and Civil Service as servants of the country. Workers and employees generally.

The Seventh House.—Foreign affairs ; relations with other countries, whether friendly or hostile, political or commercial. Marriage, divorce, women.

The Eighth House.—Public mortality, deaths, the kinds of people who die. The death duties. Financial relations with foreign countries. The Privy Council.

The Ninth House.—Shipping, sea traffic, and long distance traffic generally, whether connected with passengers or commerce. Cables, wireless telegraphy. Religion, the churches, preachers. Law Courts, judges. Universities, professors, Philosophical and Scientific Institutions and publications.

The Tenth House.—The Monarch or President, the Government, people in authority. Royalty, eminent and famous persons. National trade. The national reputation, credit, and power.

The Eleventh House.—Parliament, especially the House of Commons. Town and County Councils and similar bodies. Friends of the nation. Legislation.

The Twelfth House.—Prisons, reformatories, criminals, spies, secret enemies of the country at home or abroad. Hospitals, asylums, almshouses, workhouses, charitable institutions. Possibly secret societies and mystical or occult religions.

Each house governs several different forms of activity ; and when a planet is in a house, it does not affect all matters included under that house to an equal extent; the nature of the planet and of the sign it occupies have to be considered. Mercury in the ninth affects the scientific and literary side of that house, while Jupiter there has more influence upon religion and the churches, and the Moon upon shipping. The lord of the eighth house in the tenth in a fiery sign might indicate the death of some royal personage; if in Taurus, of some very rich man; if in Gemini, of some famous writer.

The tenth house denoted the Monarch originally; but the government of a country has, in modern times, passed so largely out of the hands of Royalty and into those of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet that it is difficult to discriminate between these. In the map for the Winter Quarter immediately preceding Queen Victoria’s death, the Sun, signifying the Monarch, was lord of the eighth house and was seriously afflicted. In the map for the Spring Quarter preceding the death of King Edward VII., the Sun was in the tenth house in mundane square to Uranus; and Saturn, lord of the eighth, was in the tenth in zodiacal square to Uranus. No living astrologer has seen the death of the heir to the throne of Great Britain or of a Prime Minister in office in England, and it would not be easy to distinguish either of these from the death of the Monarch, astrologically.

The strongest parts of a mundane map are the cusps of the first, tenth, seventh, and fourth houses; next the ninth and eleventh houses ; then the eighth and twelfth; and afterwards the remaining houses below the horizon.

世俗星盘中最强的部分是第一宫、第十宫、第七宫和第四宫的宫头；其次是第九宫和第十一宫；然后是第八宫和第十二宫；最后是地平线以下的其余宫位。

The twelve zodiacal signs rule the same affairs as the twelve houses, corresponding each to each in numerical order; Aries to the first house, Taurus to the second, and so on. The planets have the same dignities in mundane houses as they have in signs; the Sun and Mars being strong in the first house; Venus and the Moon in the second house; and so on. The signification of the signs, however, is more general and less local than that of the houses. Uranus afflicted in Capricorn for instance, tends to disturb Governments and Monarchs, just as it does in the tenth house; but the sign applies to the world in general, and (except for the countries ruled by the sign) not more to one part of the world than to another; whereas a map of the heavens for a New Moon or Solar Ingress is limited in: its application to a given country or district.
